Product Description
Designed by George Stephenson, Locomotion No. 1 remains an icon of the early railways. Hauling the inaugural train on the Stockton & Darlington Railway of 1825 – the first public railway – it was a notable advance in locomotive design, notably through the use of coupling rods linking the wheels.
Combined with the Locomotion tender and component pack (each separately available; the pack includes bespoke ‘plug’ wheels), this scratch aid enables an unpowered free-rolling model engine that can be used with the various motorised coaches/trucks also available.
Necessary to Complete:
N Gauge Locomotion No 1 Component Scratch Aids (separately available; includes plug wheels)
Locomotion No 1 Tender (separately available)
Couplings (the method used is at the builder's discretion)
Weight (the boiler is hollow)
Wire (Coupling and connecting rods are best scratch-built, but printed alternatives in the parts pack offer a ready-made option. NOTE: to successfully fit they may need re-drilling and filing to make thinner)
Styrene strip (for feed pump lever and wheel keeper plates)
Fuse wire (for operational feed water pump linkages)
Pins (0.5mm for the piston rods and beam connections; 0.6-1mm for the wheel connections)
NB if commercial spoked wheels are preferred, Graham Farish Jinty driving wheels can be used by adding 0.25mm shims around the axleboxes. The easiest way to do this is to cut a U of thin paper. These will require a different return crank, however, a link to which can be provided if requested.
I hope you enjoy this unusual and eye-catching model.
