Product Description
Now with working link and pin drawheads and other coupling options included. (Note the brakewheel rim diameter has been increased .2mm from that shown in photos to conform with print material constraints, so no more occasional rejections.)
Kit to make 2 N scale four wheel wooden hoppers, commonly called coal jimmies. These cars were ubiquitous in the eastern coal mining regions of North America from the 1840 to 1900 and ran in the early day version of unit trains. This version features a simple wood spring mounting for the journals and was built up to about 1880, commonly in use through the 1890s. Also available is a version with pedestal journals, kit R16 and combo kit of both types.
Modeled after drawings and photos of Pennsylvania, Reading, and Central of New Jersey examples ca. 1875.
Includes basic brakes and every detail I could find from the original drawings, except for the chain and interior crossbar needed to operate the hopper doors on the prototype (holes are provided to insert a length of .010" wire for the crossbar, too bad I couldn't make the doors actually operate). Use .010" wire (not included) for the brake staff, for which there are holes in the body bracket, ratchet, and brake wheel. Space and locator holes are provided for mounting Microtrains Z/Nn3 couplers, or use the working link and pin couplers provided. 3 additional endbeam inserts are also included with link and pin couplers, simple hooks, or a hole for installing hook and link couplers available from the 2mm Society (part 2-345).
Requires 33" low profile wheelsets with .540" (13.8mm) length axles (MT, FVM etc.). Others may also work.
This model has very fine detail so the prefered material is Smoothest or Smooth Fine Detail.
Clean with alcohol and soapy water. Use Bestine rubber cement remover if particularly greasy. Some areas may require mild scraping with a toothpick to remove waxy manufacturing residue, especially the interior (an ultrasonic cleaner and toothbrush works great for this).
Part Number R15.
