This catapult-launched reconnaissance floatplane was used primarily for gunfire spotting for the fleet but also served as a fighter when necessary. Over 750 were built and served aboard battleships, cruisers, and seaplane tenders. Toward the end of the war they were used for liaison and coastal patrol.
