Product Description
The ironclad ram Sphinx was built in Bordeaux, France, between 1863 and 1865, ordered in secret by the Confederate Navy, but after sales to the latter were forbidden by the French government the ship was sold to Denmark, however they refused to accept the ship and sold it back to the Confederates. She was commissioned as CSS Stonewall in 1865, but the war ended before she could reach the US coast, so it was turned to Union forces.
Japan bought her from the US in 1867, renamed it Kotetsu, but the delivery was held up by the US government due to the ongoing Meiji Restoration. The ship was finally handed over in 1869 and participated in the battle of Hakodate Bay; in 1871 the name was changed yet again, this time into Azuma, and took part in various skirmishes in 1874, until the Satsuma rebellion of 1877, but by that time she was thoroughly obsolete due to the incredible development speed of naval technology. Azuma was sold for scrap in 1889.
