00 Gauge, 1:76, 4mm/Foot
The GWR Armstrong 517 Class 0-4-2T locomotives were built by the Great Western Railway at their Wolverhampton Works, in several batches between 1868 and 1885. This particular version represents a "typical" 517 with straight coal bunker and later Belper firebox.
The print is designed to fit the HORNBY 00 gauge 14XX chassis (Originally made by Dapol) as a result it is approximately 4mm longer than it should be for this particular batch of 517s.
In addition to the chassis you will need the following:
Handrails, lamp irons etc
Hornby Pannier Tank Chimney cap*
GWR Safety Valve Cover (from the 14XX)
Buffers (Slatters Ref 4908 GWR Dean/Churchward/Armstrong)
Vacuum brake pipes
number plates
paint and transfers.
To enable the model to print, the bore of the chimney is slightly too small for the original screw so will need to be opened out gently. I used a small flat blade screwdriver to acheive this. In addition it may be necessary to remove a small lip of plastic inside the the smoke box at the front to allow for the bosy to slide on/off more easily.
The curved surfaces on the body will also need some smoothing to remove ridges.
Slots are provided in the buffer beam to allow Screw link couplings to be fitted (also not supplied).
The chassis will need some modifications to represent this particular prototype (remove the outside frames around the trailing wheels and sand boxes).
The same chimney cap is also used on Hornby's Holden 101 0-4-0T bodies and the old Tri-ang "Lord of the Isles".
NOTE: This model has yet to be test printed however, it is based on my "Fair Rosamund" varient which has and is available elsewhere on this site.
