Modeled after an actual 80 cell battery well utilized for powering signals and signaling equipment. This is prototypically accurate to the Great Northern Railway and its drawings and were used into the Burlington Northern era on ABS and CTC installations.
Please note that these wells extended far underground and this model goes only to the typical ground height trackside. The lid was typically 6" above the top of the adjacent track rail. Also note that a handle and possibly chains will have to be added as well. The handle for the lid can be made out of wire at the modeler's discretion utilizing the GN drawings below for dimesions and by drilling at the nuts located on the lid. Chains can be sourced elsewhere as well for securing the lid . Lids were largely painted black, although verify this with local historical photos.
Reference GN drawings for handle dimensions and other information.
