Armament was changed due to the disappointing performance of the 11in gun, a crash production of the new 15in Dahlgren smoothbore was ordered; in the end the ships of the class had to be equipped with one new 15in smoothbore and one old 11in rifle in a similar 2-gun turret to that of the original Monitor.
