Fitted Archer's Thumb Ring- Version G3

Size 20mm

Using modern manufacturing methods (Computer Modeling & 3D Printing), it is now possible to have a custom-made thumb ring crafted exactly to your thumb’s shape!  Having a thumb ring that fits correctly will speed up training time, increase comfort and improve accuracy!

What is a Thumb Ring?

A thumb ring is a piece of equipment designed to protect the thumb when using a thumb draw or Asian style draw. The thumb, index and second fingers that draw the bow, with the thumb ring protecting the pad of the first thumb joint. The end of the thumb and ring acts as a lever with the joint being the fulcrum, like the wheel of a wheel barrow. The load is the bow string sitting against the ring, just past the joint, and the end of the thumb and ring is held with the index and second fingers, like the handles of the wheel barrow. The palm is held down and the release is like flicking a quarter. The thumb and two fingers are much stronger than the three-finger draw. Palm down is a much more ergonomic hand position. It's very much like a modern mechanical release, but thousands of years old. This ring was often made of leather, stone, animal horn, wood, ivory, metal, or glass, and now even plastic.  A thumb ring fits over the end of the thumb, coming to rest at the outer edge of the outer joint.  A flat area extends from the ring to protect the pad of the thumb from the bowstring. How do you use a Thumb Ring?

When drawing a bow using a thumb draw, the thumb is hooked around the bowstring just beneath the arrow, and its grip reinforced with the first (sometimes second) finger. The bowstring rests against the inner pad of the archer's thumb and the thumb ring protects the skin.

There are a many variations on the thumb ring technique in archery.  Almost all of these various techniques can be classified into two types, either shielding the thumb or pinching the string.  Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Shielding:   In this style, the thumb ring is simply used to support and protect the thumb from the bowstring.  The bowstring rests against the flat of the ring when the bow is drawn.  This is often the more natural feeling draw and allows the load of the draw to be spread over the entire pad of the thumb, which can be further supported by one or two fingers.  The drawbacks to this are that it can allow the string to move around on the face of the ring leading to inconsistency in release.  To help with this, rings sometimes have knocking groves cut into them.  This technique is referred to as the "Mongolian Release" or the "Mongolian Draw.

Pinching:    In this style, the string is grabbed under the ring right in the joint of the thumb while the thumb is straight or slightly bent.  The string is then locked into the ring by bringing the thumb and pinching between the thumb and ring.  The index finger is then folded over the nail of the thumb to lock the string.  This technique is often refers to as a Manchu draw.

Today, archers from most of Asia and some regions of Northern Africa use thumb rings.

Warning! Archery is by its very nature dangerous to both you and others. When first learning the thumb ring always start with a very low draw weight to build the correct technique and accuracy. Even experienced archers using other draw methods must follow this when learning the thumb draw technique.

Why use a Thumb Ring?

This technique has many major advantages compared to traditional western style of releasing:

-        A thumb and two fingers are far stronger than three fingers allowing for higher draw weights.

-        Release is much more consistent allowing for greater accuracy.

-        Thumb ring draw is a very secure and stable draw; it can even be done from horseback.

-        Shorter bows can be used without worry of pinching your fingers between the string and arrow nock. This appears in horse bows and some compound bows.

Why use My Thumb rings over all other options?

The G3 Thumb Ring is compatible with both shielding and pinching draw techniques. It can be made in an inexpensive plastic for those just wishing to try out or a durable polished metal for those looking for something to last. Even under the more sever usage our rings will last for years.

Everyone’s thumb is a different size and after carful research and testing we came up with a formula for the perfect fit based on the width of the user’s thumb. A thumb ring needs to be both a snug fit during draw and loose during release.

The G3 is the third major iteration to our design. It has been designed for comfort and a smooth release. The interior of the ring is a smooth transition and support of the thumb. The base of the ring is designed to fit snug but also have enough room to get out of the way of the string when released.

A look hole has been attached to the base of the ring to allow for a wrist strap to be attached. Using the strap prevents the ring from being lost in the event that it slips off the thumb.
