Product Description
Please read the entire description an view all photos before buying. Finished model requires additional parts.
This HO scale coal trestle is based on one that existed in Williamsport, PA during the steam era. The structure was located in the Pennsylvainia Railroad engine servicing facility just east of the roundhouse right in a residential area. The trestle was in a pit, so the approach track was not very long or steep. Coal was unloaded from hopper cars into the pit. A steam crane with a clamshell bucket moved coal from the pit to the steam engine tenders.
There were no engineering drawings availabble, so the model was designed based on prototype photos. Components dimenstions for parts such as stringers and piers were based on PRR drawings so the parts are reasonable. There were no photos available showing the north or walkway side, and no photos showing the bumper end. The old photos posted on various sites were not the best quality, so many details were lost in the shadows. I made my best guesses to create a reasonable, good looking model.
Some interesting features:
Photos show the trestle was long enough for three H21 (about 40 feet each) hopper cars.
Photos show there was a walkway on one side only.
The trestle bents have no batter, or angle. Photos show the posts are straight.
Modeling
Note on the material: White Natural Versatile Plastic is the only material available for a model this size at a reasonable price. White Natural Versatile Plastic is a tough nylon like material, and will stand up to handling, although the railing can be broken if mis-handled. The material has a rough texture. However, the texture can be hidden with dark paint.
You will need a few pieces of Evergreen Styrene to finish the model. The walkway and intermediate railing are too thin to print on this large mode.
You will also need two lengths of Micro Engineering code 55 rail. Code 70 and larger will not fit in the tie plates.
You will also need a bumper. I used an HO scale 4-pack Ellis Bumper by Andrew's Railroad Details available in Shapeways Marketplace. I removed the rail detail and bent code 55 rail to fit.
Instructions coming soon. See the in progress photos and contact me for help.
Thanks.
