1/350 USS Kearsarge Hull

USS Kearsarge was a Mohican class sloop of war, launched in 1861 and entering service the following year. After completion, she immediately departed for Spain and joined the blockade of the Confederate raider CSS Sumter; little did her former captain, Raphael Semmes, know he was to confront the Kearsarge once more.
The Union vessel spent 1863 searching for the Confederate raider CSS Alabama along the North Atlantic coast; however, in May 1864, she ran aground in Dutch waters and was then repaired. The delay coincidentally allowed her to surprise CSS Alabama in Cherbourg, France, in June that year, and confronted her.
Since the previous year, and unknown to the Confederate captain, Kearsarge was fitted with lengths of chain along her hull as impromptu armour to cover her machinery spaces; in addition to Alabama's faulty shells (due to decaying powder and fuzes in storage for too long a time), the Union warship defeated and sunk the Alabama just outside French territorial waters.
Returning to active service in April 1865, after extensive repairs, Kearsarge was assigned once again to European waters, in an unsuccessful attempt to intercept Confederate warships. After the end of the war, the ship was decommissioned in August 1866, only to be recommissioned and put out of service again and again between 1868-1870, 1873-1878, 1879-1886 and 1888 to her sinking in 1894, wrecked on a reef along Haiti's coast.
