Product Description
This is an N gauge model of the Stockton & Darlington Railway locomotive ‘Derwent’. Built in 1845 to the ‘Tory’ class design of Timothy Hackworth, it operated commercially until 1898, last steaming as a preserved engine in 1925. Today it is displayed at the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum.
Combined with the N Gauge ‘Derwent’ tenders (the engine having two, one each for coal and water) and our bespoke pre-gauged and quartered ‘plug’ wheels, this scratch aid enables an unpowered free-rolling model engine. Coupled to a motorised coach or truck (each separately available, plus free-rolling coaches and trucks), a fully working 'Era 1' N Gauge train can be created.
Necessary to Complete:
N Gauge Derwent Plug Wheels (separately available)
N Gauge Derwent coal and water tenders (both separately available)
Couplings (the method used is at the builder's discretion)
Weight (the boiler is hollow)
Slide bars & coupling rods (these can be formed from wire fitting into pre-drilled holes in the cylinder and its support plate – please see video below. I have also been informed Dapol Terrier connecting rods can also be used.)
(NB small strips of styrene will hold the driving wheels in place)
Optional additional details to scratchbuild (at the builder's discretion):
Safety valves (location pre-drilled and main body units ready-included)
Running board sides (across the slide bars)
Regulator and reverser levers (plus other control/valve rodding)
Driver
NB if commercial spoked wheels are preferred, Graham Farish Jinty driving wheels can be used by adding 0.25mm shims around the axleboxes. The easiest way to do this is to cut a U of thin paper.
