Product Description
This joystick is released as more or less a curio and HOPEFULLY to allow for continuity of older TaoStyx64 designs.  Directly from ShapeWays, it is not functional without a drill press nor any special kind of jig to hold it vertical so that one can drill/tap the cap hole for the M3 screw.  Furthermore, the dimensions of the joystick can be such that it doesn't function with good OEM parts (although I tried to size the joystick in a "safe" way so as to maximize the chance of functionality).  This part is currently in testing.  If you want someone to make you a bronze stick, reach out to one of the mods on the TaoStyx64 server.  Tao has yet to receive the prototypes (should have them mid-March 2024).  The design may get tweaked thereafter.

On the bronze sticks, the most important dimensions are the "sphere", the "hammer", and the cylinder.  Sometimes, the hammer and sphere need to be filed down because they've become too large.  Sometimes, the sphere is too big and can be polished down while the stick is spinning.  Occasionally, there are flat spots on the "sphere."  Most of the time, these flat sparts are mostly cosmetic, mostly benign.  Occasionally, they can make the stick disfunctional without some tuning.  This is another reason why these sticks are considered "experimental."

Choose "small" for raw unpolished bronze.  Choose "large" if you're going to let shapeways polish your joystick.  The latter hasn't been tested.  Try at your own risk.

This joystick is designed to potentially become either a Tao V1, V2 or V3 depending upon the intentions of the craftsman.

After drilling/tapping the M3 threads in the top of the joystick:

For a V1, one needs to drill out the nib hole to 2.00mm to a depth deep enough so that the nib will go all the way in.  One may wish to file away material on the bottom flat face in order to tune the nib.  This is a good way to attempt to get plug-and-play V1 nibs functioning in the stick.  As it is set up currently, the nib height is intentionally "too high." (although you may get lucky and be "right on" depending on your bowl, test before assuming anything)  Alternatively, one could file the nibs every time one changes the nib, although this is extra work compared to the previous option.

For V2, one simply needs to drill a 3/32" hole into the bottom of the joystick and gradually one should drill until the ball sits to the height that matches your bowl.  I recommend testing repeatedly between drillings to get your feel just right.  This is probably the least labor intensive option to create a Tao bronze joystick.

Making a V3 is the most difficult as it requires a drill press that has no "run out" OR you know the run out of your drill press and you have compensated your setup to drill the stick perfectly vertically.  it also requires use of a tiny M2 tap which can break quite easily if not careful.

To make a V3, drill the nib hollow with a 3/32" drill bit such that the widest point of the hole is congruent with the plane of the top of the hammer (more or less).  After that, take a tap drill for M2 threads and drill the joystick all the way through.  Be very careful as lots of heat is generated in this step.  You can drill from either end although it's most critical that the hole is most centered on the nib side of the joystick.  Tap the M2 hole.

There are various ways in which the V3 stick can be made, and you may want to alter the procedure to what best suits your equipment and skills.

I hope you have fun experimenting with this!
