Product Description
SMS Friedrich der Grosse, second unit of the Kaiser class battleships, the third class of 1st generation dreadnoughts acquired by the Kaiserliche Marine. The ship was launched in June 1911 and completed in October 1912.
In contrast to previous German practice, the number of turret was dropped from 6 to 5, substituing the hexagonal layout of the previous Nassaus and Helgolands for a turret on the forecastle, two en echelon amidship, and two superfiring aft. The en echelon disposition allowed limited cross-deck firing for a 10-gun broadside.
The Kaiser class were standard vessels for their era, and pretty solid ships with very good all-round protection; however, the parallel introduction and completion of the 1st generation British superdreadnoughts of the Orion class necessitated upgrading the design, resulting in the Konig class. All ships of the class (except Prinzregent Luitpold) were noted to make between 22.1 - 22.4kts on trials.
SMS Friedrich der Grosse was assigned to III Battle Squadron of the High Seas Fleet at the outbreak of the war, serving as fleet flagship until 1917, as the newly completed Baden took up the role. Friedrich der Grosse, along with her sisters, participated in all major fleet operations of the Great War.
At Jutland she was the eighth battleship in line with Admiral Scheer on board, leading the High Seas Fleet in the middle of the formation; in front of her, her sisters Kaiser, Kaiserin and Prinzregent Luitpold. Konig Albert, the fifth vessel of the class, was in drydock for maintenance. Friedrich der Grosse fired at the battleship Warspite after the battlecruiser engagement, as the two fleets closed in; however she emerged unscathed from both engagements of the day. She returned to port not having been hit once.
After the war, the battleship was interned with the rest of the High Seas Fleet in Scapa Flow, and ultimately scuttled on 21 June 1919, capsizing at 12:16. In 1936 the ship was raised and scrapped; her bell was returned to Germany in 1965.
