Corellian Engineering Corporation moved from the YT-1300 to the YT-2400 through iterative steps that slowly transitioned away from the forward mandible design and to a more steamlined saucer.  However, it still look a few design iterations for the mandibles to be completely removed.  The last such design was the YT-1850, which saw the incorporation of the faster and more compact engine bay that would g onto be used in the YT-2400.  Also incorporated was the more modular and straight offset cockpit module that allowed for greater customization.  At the time it was hard to see exactly where Corellian design was going, but these innovations helped to point the way.
