The Talyllyn Railway Tea Van was built using parts of the ex-Penrhyn workmans carriage, TR No 7. The top station at the time, 'Abergynolwyn' lacked any means to provide refreshments for visitors so the tea van was built to cater for them. It was brought up fron Tywyn on the first train of the day and brought back on the last to replenish stocks, a particular mishap occured during one of the return journeys and it became immortalised as a childrens story by Rev W Awdry.
During the late 60s however, No 7 was used as a mess van for the volenteers during the construction of the Nant Gwernol extention and the new Abergynolwyn station building which included its own tea room and thus the van was uneeded. Eventually the van was stripped and the frame was used for a guards van with wheelchair accessable for passengers in 1992. The latter is availible here:
