Product Description
USS Kearsarge (CV-33) was one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The name was to be used on USS Hornet (CV-12), but the ship was renamed after the sinking of CV-8. Kearsarge was one of the Essexes to enter service after the end of hostilities, in April 1946, engaging on training cruises and fleet maneuvers until June 1950, when she received SCB-27A modernization. Returning to service in 1952, in September of that year Kearsarge joined TF 77 for the Korean conflict; while deployed she was reclassified as CVA (attack carrier).
After the war, she featured in the movie 'The Caine Mutiny' of 1954.
Between 1956 and 1957, the carrier entered drydock again for SCB-125 conversion, being then deployed in the Far East and reclassified again as CVS (anti-submarine warfare carrier) in 1958. During the Vietnam war, Kearsarge was stationed in the South China Sea from 1964 to 1966, but was fairly quickly reduced to reserve after that during the general reduction of USN vessel numbers, being decommissioned in 1970 and sold for scrap in 1974.
