Product Description
VTOL F-104 concept designed by Pete Girard from Ryan Aerospace, circa 1960.
The wing tips would rotate to perform a vertical takeoff, basically functioning like a helicopter and turning with exhaust ports underneath the tail. Once it would reach a sufficient altitude, the main jet engine would engage and the rotor would slow down and lock in place, becoming a triangular wing. The F-104 was most likely chosen due to its relative light weight since the rotor would produce very little lift.
