The gyroid is a famous triply periodic minimal surface discovered by Alan Schoen at the end of the 60s. The gyroid separates space into two identical labyrinths of passages. This light 5cm perforated version is inspired by the beautiful 3D model of Jonathan Johanson.
Although it's hard to tell at a glance, this version is not the usual pseudo-gyroid trigonometric isosurface available in many 3D rendering math software. It is a true tension minimized gyroid, built using "Surface Evolver" (by Ken Brakke). The perforating process and the thickness have been optimized to allow a print in 5 cm dimension at reasonable cost.
