Product Description
The 1950s British Railways modernisation plan, encouraging fast (up to 60mph) vacuum-braked block (common cargo and destination) trains, led to the introduction ofvacuum braked 35T tanks in the late 1950s and was boosted by track upgrades permitting axle loads of 22.5 tons in the 1960s.
In 1963 Charles Roberts Ltd. launched a 45 ton gross loaded weight, vacuum (and later, air) braked monobloc tank wagon design. Several versions were built, Class A for highly inflammable spirits such as petrol, Class B for heavier oils such as fuel oil or bitumen, and also LPG versions for liquified petroleum gas. Customers included the Shell, BP, ESSO, Texaco, Gulf and Regent petroleum companies, and by 1968 Shell-Mex & BP alone was operating almost 4000 of these wagons.
NOTES Either a single (Choose SMALL option) or a pair of (Choose LARGE option) kits can be ordered. Each kit includes:
One complete 25' 8" Over Headstocks, 15' Wheelbase chassis for a 45 ton Class A, B or liquified petroleum gas tank wagon.
One set of tank ends and fittings for a 45T TTA petroleum tank wagon. The ladders will be quite fragile in this material. Replacement ladders in resilient Versatile Plastic are available seperately, or you might prefer to replace them with brass equivalents.
Tank barrels can be made from 25mm diameter tube, rod or dowel. One of the earliest designs to Diagram TT004 had tank barrels 7.124m long, including dished ends. If using the tank ends included, a 61mm length of 25mm diameter tube is required.
Depending on the wheelsets chosen, the brake blocks/hangers might need some careful filing to suit.
