Product Description
In 1917 the KuK Marine (Kaiserliche und Konigliche Kriesgmarine), the Austro-Hungarian Navy, revisited their series of battle cruiser concepts (Design Ia-If), drawn up in 1915-16, to maintain ideas up to speed with what was built (or projected to be built) abroad.
The hull was the same as Design I, with a standard displacement of 30.000 tons (34.000 full load), maximum speed of 30 kn, 225 mm main belt, and general dimensions of 220 x 29 mt at the waterline.
What changed was the main armament: three 38 cm twin turrets instead of four 35 cm ones, arranged in the same one bow-one midships-one stern layout. The choice of calibre cannot be determined with certainty, but the fact the Germans were planning to use such guns on the projected Ersatz Yorck class, as well as the two completed Bayerns and the two under construction, plus the British use of 15'' guns on the Queen Elizabeth, R and Renown classes, as well as the Italians designing the Francesco Caracciolo class, all can be taken into account to have influenced that choice to one degree or another.
