This is a kit for a quadrotor which is lightweight, sturdy and flies great! All connections are press-fit which makes it very easy to replace, upgrade or modify parts. The frame is very robust due to the carbon beams which run continuously through the center, and still more lightweight than other frames of similar size.
These are all required plastic parts - to complete the assembly, the following items are also required:
- Carbon tube, square, 6x6mm, Carbon I-beam, 6x1mm, small self-tapping screws, small pieces of foam for vibration damping
- 4x brushless motor, speed controller and propeller, LiPo battery
- autopilot (own design shown, but others would work too), GPS
(All these parts are readily available from RC retailers and would have to be ordered separately).
Prototype to Product contest:
This is a fairly complex design with precise press-fit connections between the 3D-printed parts and the carbon beams, snap-fit for the hood, and precisely placed mounting holes for motors and electronics. The model shown is the 3rd iteration of this design with many improvements. A Form1 printer would greatly accelerate testing the individual parts, and testing the fit with the non-printed components. As this design is very modular, and parts can be exchanged easily, there is a lot of opportunity to print and fit upgrade parts, e.g. camera mounts or pan-tilt units, as well as adapted parts for different autopilots or motors to allow for customisation. For the final version, Shapeways' WhiteStrongFlexible material is great and has been proven to be very resilient and robust.
