Product Description
Designed to be compatible with the "LEGO Technic Trains" project, this is a flanged driver for a functional pneumatic engine, or for steam locomotives in general. The rolling diameter is 7 studs, which I designate 7R. The part overall is 8x8x1.5 studs. Equivalent to a #17 on the system train wheel size chart.
The Technic Trains rails are 7 studs edge to edge, essentially 1 inch to 1 mm scale (1:25) in Standard-gauge. So this wheel is equivalent to a 56 inch / 1420mm driver.
In practical terms, I printed version 1 with Shapeways in white PA12 and had no issues with the printing process. The fit is tight on Technic pins and axles. This is version 2, with the main change being a higher polycount for rounder outer surface. The original rolls fine but has visible facets. So I haven't printed this specific file, but I'm confident that it's structurally workable.
The intended usage is as follows:
1. Put a Technic beam 1x3 thin (6632 x1) in the slot on the front face.
2. Slide axle with stop (24316 or 87083) through one of the beam's axle holes from behind.
3. Attach pulley wheel (4185 x1) to back face using 3/4 pins (32002 x 3).
4. Put main rods on the axle.
5. Use additional 1x3 thin beams, or liftarms (61408) to create a 90 degree crank offset for valvetrain linkages.
Used this way, the main rods and valvetrain will each have a 2.8 stud throw, which suits the medium pneumatic cylinders. The valve throw is naturally reduced by the Walschaertz valve gear, so it can activate regular pneumatic switches.
