Updated design.
This is a new draft gear box to fit in place of the Kato draft gear box. This is for a Kadee coupler. This new draft gear box will move the coupler head back closer to the pilot plate to give a more prototype look and not have the coupler hanging way out in front of the model.
This is for people who cut the glad hand off the Kadee coupler. It might work with the glad hands on. I have not tested it because I cut them off all the time before I install the coupler.
The fit is tight and you want it to be tight in the beginning because you have to drill and tap a new screw hole. With a tight fit, the box will not move when you use a #53 drill to locate the center point to drill and tap for a #0-80 thread. The through hole in the part is the correct clearance size for a 0-80 screw.
You first have to fill the existing coupler mounting pin hole. However you do it, it needs to be done. I drill and tap it for a 4-40 screw. I then use locktight and screw a brass screw into it tightly. Let it dry and then remove the screw head flush to the coupler pad surface.
Clean the part up thouroughly, assemble the coupler and then insert it through teh pilot plate. Line up the front edge of the new draft gear box with the front edge of the buffer plate on the pilot and then locate where you have to drill and tap the new hole. After you have done this, you can then sand the part more to give a looser slip fit.
