Dihydromyrcenol

Dihydromyrcenol is the quintessence of citrusy-floral lime, bergamot, and lavender freshness with a fruity, metallic, clary sage-like undertone. It is easily accessible by hydrogenation of α-pinene, pyrolysis of the resulting cis-pinane and subsequent hydroxylation, and was initially only an intermediate en route to hydroxycitronellal ('Scent and Chemistry – The Molecular World of Odors', Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta/Wiley-VCH, 2012, p. 17–18 and p. 154–157). But with the success of ‘Azzaro pour homme’ (Azzaro, 1978) by Gerard Anthony, Martin Heiddenreich and Richard Wirtz, dihydromyrcenol quicky outgrew hydroxycitronellal in volume, and is today ubiquitous as fresh top note from classic masculine fougères to modern feminine chyprés. The 20% overdose of dihydromyrcenol in 'Cool Water' (Davidoff, 1988) by Pierre Bourdon, and the 4% dihydromyrcenol in 'Chance' (Chanel, 2003) by Jacques Polge are emblematic of the tremendous impact this terpene alcohol had in contemporary perfumery to provide a fresh and clean impetus.
