Ottis Lance is not a name familiar outside of the frantic sport of motorcycle road racing. Inside the sport he is a living legend, having carved out a career that saw him go right to the top of professional racing in the USA. In a career that has lasted over 30 years, Ottis (or “Otter” to his friends) has raced here and overseas and has always provided his sponsors and his fans with the best value available. However, while riding his motorcycle to work on the 1st of October 2014, Otter was involved in an horrific accident. A car crossed to his side of the road and hit him, leaving him with shocking injuries. These included 3 broken vertebrae, 8 fractured ribs a destroyed knee and a compound fracture of the tibia. Worse than any of these injuries, however, was the damage to his femur, with 5 inches of bone being smashed beyond repair. Narrowly avoiding amputation of the leg, Otter has endured over 100 days of hospitalisation thus far, 14 major surgeries to try and save his leg and there are yet more to come. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation as well as dealing with on-going issues with his injured right hand. Yet through all of this Otter has maintained his sense of humor and his positive attitude. His contagious laugh is still evident as he looks forward to returning to the racetrack again to continue his racing and his mentoring of younger riders. Otter’s friends have rallied around and are providing great support.
