Product Description
USS Idaho (BB-42) was the third and last New Mexico class battleship built in 1915-17. Commissioned in 1919, the ship spent most of the 1920s and 30s in training exercises in the Pacific fleet. With the renewal of the naval treaty limitations of Washington with the signing of the London Treaty in 1930, the New Mexico class ships were heavily reconstructed between 1931 and 1934.
In December 1941 Idaho was stationed in Iceland with her sister Mississippi, going all the way to San Francisco via the Panama canal, and replacing there her main battery guns; her secondary battery of 5''/51 was also removed to be fitted on merchant vessels. Due to the lack of USN fast fleet oilers the battleships were not deployed until April 1943, when Idaho departed for the Aleutian Islands, where she was flagship of the bombardment force. This role as shore bombardment vessel continued throughout 1943-44, on the Gilbert, Marshall and Mariana Islands, among others. During the battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944 Idaho provided direct cover for the invasion fleet, therefore was not engaged directly by the enemy. In October of the same year she was put in dock for a major overhaul, where her 5''/25 were finally swapped for 5''/38 guns in single mounts.
After the Okinawa campaign, Idaho was present for the surrender on 2 September. The ship was decommissioned very quickly after the war's end, returning on 16 October in Norfolk and being put in reserve there in July 1946, where she remained until late 1947 when Idaho was towed away for scrapping.
