Product Description

Certainly an iconic hallmark for an alternative or bohemian lifestyle, but definitely not reserved exclusively for patchouliful hippies, and for sure no excuse not to bathe! Yet, patchouli indeed ranks as the most potent and fixative of all scents of the flora, and with its woody–earthy–camphoraceous odor notes in perfect harmony already constitutes a well-balanced fragrance on its own. Still about one third of all fine fragrances contain patchouli oil. An enchanting aromatic elixir in real, a mysterious lucky charm filled with impenetrable magic as a pendant.

(–)-Patchoulol is with a content of 23.6–45.9% the main constituent of patchouli oil ('Scent and Chemistry – The Molecular World of Odors', Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta/Wiley-VCH, 2012, p. 251–258), and despite some debate today generally recognized as its smelling principle. Admittedly, patchouli started out its career as insecticide to protect the colorful cashmere shawls from Kashmir and India on their long sea voyage to Western Europe in the beginning of the 19th century. But soon enough the scent of patchouli became as fashionable as the Kashmiri shawls itself. The name patchouli derives from Tamil 'பச்சை' ('patchai', green) and 'இலை' ('ellai', leaf), and the green leaves of Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. are dried, fermented and steam distiled to afford in 1–3.5% yield patchouli oil, of which today well over 1000 metric tons are produced worldwide per year. Prominent examples for perfumery classics featuring patchouli oil are 'Aromatics Elixir' (Clinique, 1971) by Bernard Chant on the feminine, and 'Gentleman' (Givenchy, 1974) by Paul Léger on the masculine side. (–)-Patchoulol is also isolated from patchouli oil and used as such in perfumery, for instance under the IFF tradename 'Healingwood'.

The dimensions of the Patchoulol pendant are ca. 2.5 cm × 2.9 cm × 2.2 cm, and the hole for the necklace (not included) has a diameter of ca. 4 mm. It is thus fitting nicely to most every necklace, for instance a 2 mm/46 cm Omega-Halsreif, cf …
