Product Description
The set includes THREE TypeM1 "D-Day balloons" and is available in 1:700 and 1:600 scales. Please check your choices of scale and material at the top right of this page.

Most famous from the images of the  landing beaches on the Normandy Invasion, the Type M1 VLA (Very Low Altitude) barrage balloon was nevertheless also used in  Sicily and Italy and later on in the Korean War.  It required as little as 10% of the hydrogen gas used by more conventional balloons and was deployed on everything from massive LSTs to diminutive Willys Jeeps - it could be towed at up to 40 miles per hour.  Two balloons flown in tandem, one above the other, could fly as high as 4, 400ft, nearly as much as as a Low Altitude type.

Goodyear alone built at least 3625 of these Type M1's but the British also built condiderable numbers.

In 1:700 scale the model measures  18.3mm in length and  has a nominal 2mm diameter hole to take a mounting rod.  In 1:600 the length is 22.1mm and again there is a nominal 2mm dia mounting hole.

Please note that the individual models are supplied "caged" together to avoid loss and damage  - cut the cage away using small sidecutter pliers or snips. Once the cage is removed there are NO sprues to cut away and clean up.
