Product Description
This is a ten-sided die based on Benford's Law, also known as the First-Digit Law, which is an observation about the frequency distribution of leading digits in many real-world datasets.
Important: This is part of a set of two dice (d10 and d40), and both dice must be purchased for this die to work. This product only contains the d40.
(the items are sold separately to allow the two dice to be of different materials and/or colors.)
The two dice are labeled as follows:
- d40: {1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1L, 1C, 1R, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2L, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3L, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9}
- d10: {0 [000], 1 [111], 2 [222], 3 [333], 4 [444], 5 [550], 6 [610], 7 [072], 8 [130], 9 [210]}
The probability distribution of the two dice approximates Benford's Law. To get the result:
- The first (leading) digit is determined by the d40 result, while the second digit is determined by the topmost number of the d10 result.
- Note that there are five special outcomes on the d40: "1L", "1C", "1R", "2L", and "3L".
- If 1L is rolled, the first digit is 1 and the second digit is the bottom left number of the d10 result.
- If 1C is rolled, the first digit is 1 and the second digit is the bottom center (middle) number of the d10 result.
- If 1R is rolled, the first digit is 1 and the second digit is the bottom right number of the d10 result.
- If 2L is rolled, the first digit is 2 and the second digit is the bottom left number of the d10 result.
- If 3L is rolled, the first digit is 3 and the second digit is the bottom left number of the d10 result.
Examples:
3 and 4 [444] gives a result of 34
7 and 9 [210] gives a result of 79
2L and 8 [130] gives a result of 21
1C and 6 [610] gives a result of 11
1R and 5 [550] gives a result of 10
