Product Description
This is a scale realistic 4-Pot rally car light pod, inspired by the pods used on Subaru WRC cars in the late 1990s. This design was produced as a request from an Instagram member. I have not printed it myself yet.
This versatile, universal design can be made to fit most 1/10 scale touring car bodies (190mm or 200mm). The side view angle of 70deg fits nicely to most hoodlines and can be sanded to fit bodies with large contours.
MOUNTING
Double sided tape (like VHB) and/or small screws can be used to mount the pod the body. There are two small bosses with a pilot hole positioned axially with the lights for mounting with screws through the body's grille area and a large flat area for mounting to the hood. This large area gives grip for double sided tape and makes it easy to mount with screws as there are no holes to find, just drill through the body where convenient.
PAINTING
The pod comes in several color options, however, I recommend getting the cheaper natural finish and painting. I ordered a white pod and painted it black using a sponge brush and five coats of acrylic model paint. The inside 'reflector' area of the pod can be painted, but I covered mine with aluminum tape to give it more reflective properties. I strongly recommend to paint before wiring.
LIGHTING BUILD
This does NOT include lights or wiring, just the light pod. Each pod has a small pilot hole that can be drilled out to fit LEDs up to 6mm diameter. I wired mine using two 5mm white LEDs as two series pairs in parallel. The lights are powered by a 9V battery installed on the foam bumper pad with dual-lock. Pre-built universal r/c lighting kits found online should work as well if you don't want to wire the pod yourself. After wiring, I potted mine with hot glue.
Each pod has a small lip on the front that can be used to fit a lense cover. I made lense covers cut from a 2L soda bottle but decided I liked the look without them instead. I recommend 0.75" diameter circles for the lense covers and attaching with a couple dabs of CA or hot glue.
