Product Description
This is a model of a SECR 6-wheeled 20T goods brake van in N-gauge / 2mmFS [  :-O you no like my split-spoke wheels? ]. The couplings for my mineral wagons fit though you need to slot the backs to rise past the drawbar hook. Free the wheels by snipping the cage. Clean out the pinpoint cones on the chassis using tiny drills and burrs, until the wheels spin freely when fitted. I recommend using Peco Parkside Dundas / Romford wheels for best running, but if you decide to use the 3D printed split spoked ones supplied, it is still a good idea to use metal axles while cleaning out the pinpoint cones in the chassis rather than blunt the plastic ones while the fit is still tight.
The hole in the roof fits neatly over the stovepipe cowl and the roof then sits neatly on the body. The verandah doors are possibly removable (I haven't tried this) if you want to model them open, but not the cabin doors. There are tiny holes to bed fine wire into for handrails and the central strut on the verandah end wall, which may need clearing of wax or whiskers of plastic. In fact they are hard to see and need drilling out to take wire. I may change the design for this.
The roof has been kept to a clean curve on top so that you can easily smooth it down if you find it has obtrustive stepping lines on it from printing. Add rainstrips over the doors using fine plastic wire if you want them. I don't think they were fitted when built, but in most later photographs there is evidence of a more or less straight diagonal strip sloping down towards the body side of the door. The real brakevans to this design were built pre-grouping, in two different styles: the early build had only one verandah and the other end was an open platform (there were similar MR brake vans too). Later, a verandah was built on the open end, but to a slightly different design from the first verandahs. This made them pretty much the same as the later build, but not quite. In this form most of them survived into nationalisation, as did the later build.
This model is for the later build, which had 2 identical verandahs from the start. Let me know if you have a strong preference for the early build or the modified early build, or would like it modelled in a different scale.
I will make this available for sale when I have one myself, and am happy that it works.
UPDATE 2020-06-27 Happy with this, see photos, now for sale.
UPDATE 2021-03-18 Uploaded photos of the finished, painted model and some more while work was in progress. UPDATE 2021-03-20 Uploaded new design with larger holes (now just under 0.3mm diameter) for handrail wire to make them easier to find. I still suggest using 0.2mm nickel silver wire, but now there should be less need to drill, only lightly to clean out - or if you want them deeper in the doorposts (be careful). Bench and seat inside are now hollow (with wax drain holes under the chassis) so there is no massive depth of plastic (which slighhtly affect the exterior surface texture in the first-printed model). The split in the wheel spokes has been enlarged to be more visible.
BTW I have also uploaded the version of this van which has the slightly differing verandahs.
