Product Description
HMS Eagle was originally laid down as Audacious, lead ship of her class of aircraft carriers of the Royal Navy, in October 1942. Construction proceeded slowly due to more pressing war needs, and when the conflict finally ended in September 1945 the ship had not even been launched.
The design of the Audacious class was a follow on to the Implacable design of armoured carriers, with the added novelty of a transom stern; the protracted construction period also meant a number of lessons were incorporated into the design, such as the ability to operate jet aircraft. Of the four units ordered, Africa was cancelled before it was laid down; Eagle (the third unit of the class) was also cancelled at 26% completion in December 1945, and the name reallocated to HMS Audacious, thus reducing the group to a two ship class.
The now Eagle was finally launched in March 1946, and pretty much completed over the following three years (again construction was slowed to allocate resources to more urgent builds) to more or less the original design, while Ark Royal was modified into a much improved ship.
Eagle finally commissioned in March 1952, visiting the Baltic and Mediterranean in peacetime deployments, returning briefly to the UK for the Coronation Review of 1953. In 1955, an angled flight deck was fitted to ease jet aircraft operations, although only a few years later entered dock once again to undergo what was supposed to be extensive modernization. The program originally called for a reconstruction similar to that operated for Victorious, but due to limited budget the rebuild of Eagle was somewhat downsized. However, new gear was installed, the angled flight deck enlarged, new catapults and radars fitted, as well as SAMs in place of her forward battery of AA guns.
The ship emerged from dock in 1964 but had only a few more years to run. In 1972 she was finally decommissioned and put in reserve for a further two years, and then used as a spare parts store for her sister Ark Royal. In 1978 it was finally towed away for scrapping.
