D&IR G Class 2-8-0 Smokebox Cover

The Duluth and Iron Range Railway was a predecessor to the well known Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range. This smokebox cover measures 60 scale inches in diameter (17.5 Millimeters) and is suitable for all G class 2-8-0s in use after 1900. You can add a brass number plate of your choice.

Locomotives 6-22 were recieved between 1884 and 1888 in multiple batches. By 1900, these engines were renumbered 36-49. By the 30s, the class had been renumbered a third time by adding a 1 in front of the two digits. 141 was the last G class locomotive on the road, surviving past the DM&IR merger. It was sold for scrap in 1939. 

These engines were perfect for logging operations on light track in northern Minnesota's dense pine forests.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MODELING THESE ENGINES:

These locomotives have never been made by any manufacturer as of April 2020. An Athearn Roundhouse 2-8-0 chassis is dimensionally correct. The boiler is too large and a new one must be rolled out of styrene. I reccommend building a new cab out of styrene as well. Engines 36-42 had fluted domes, and 43-49 had smooth domes. They entire group of locomotives had laird crossheads, so the alligator crossheads included with the roundhouse 2-8-0 must be replaced with those of the 2-6-0 or the 4-4-0 to be accurate. Frank A.
