Product Description
The Kii class was a series of four ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered in 1920; two years earlier, the 8-8 fleet plan that provided for the construction of the Tosa, Nagato and Amagi classes had been upgraded following the approval by the US Congress of the building of ten battleships and six battle cruisers in the following years. Therefore Japan ordered eight more capital ships, which would become the Kii and N.13 classes.
The Kii design was based on the Amagi, which was in turn developed from Tosa, and carried the same five 41 cm twin turrets as her predecessors. A relatively high speed, compared to previous superdreadnoughts, of 29.75 kn could be achieved by retaining the Amagi powerplant, developing over 130,000 shp. By adding a thousand tons to the previous design the inclined armour belt and deck could be made thicker at 292 mm and 120 mm, respectively, although at this point such a design blurred the distinction between battleship and battle cruiser so much that the Japanese simply went over it and unified the concept in the 'fast battleship' formula, of which the Kii class (and HMS Hood being completed at the time) were a glimpse of designs to come, the eight above water torpedo tubes still being somewhat of an anachronism.
In October 1921 two ships were ordered, Kii and Owari. Two more followed before the end of the year, materials gathered and the first two keels laid, when the Washington Naval Treaty put a hard stop to their construction, being cancelled in the following years.

The last two ships were possibly named Suruga and Omi.
