Product Description
SMS Lutzow was the second Derfflinger class battle cruiser which had a fairly short career.
Launched in 1913 and completed two years later, the ship participated in the bombardment of British coastal towns as part of Aufklarungsgruppe I (I Scouting Group) during 1915, and it was as part of one such raid that ended in the Battle of Jutland where she met her demise.
Leading I SC, followed by her sister ship Derfflinger and three more German battle cruisers, at around 16:00 hrs the German formation opened fired after the screening light cruisers had spotted the scouting element of the Grand Fleet. Lutzow engaged the British flagship Lion and scored a few hits within the hour, one of which blew away the roof armour of Q turret on the enemy vessel: only the promp action of Major Francis Harvey, ordering the magazine to be flooded, prevented a column of fire going down the turret shaft and igniting every propellant charge in its way, which would have destroyed the ship, a fate that befell three British battle cruisers on that day.
Lutzow was struck multiple times during the engagement, and she would be responsible for the destruction of HMS Invincible; however she was repeatedly hit on the forecastle area and the progressive flooding was slowing the ship down. Admiral Hipper had to move to another ship as Lutzow was not able to keep up with the rest of I SC anymore by nightfall; at 20:00 hrs the water had reached N.1 turret magazine. At 1:00 hrs on 1 June the pumps were no longer able to keep up with the flooding, and by half an hour later, the propeller were partially above water as the bow slowly went under. At 2:20 hrs the order was given to abandon Lutzow, and she was scuttled by torpedoes from escorting destroyer G38.
In 2015 the wreck would be located and marked as a war grave. The sonar scans revealed the hull lies upside down, the midships portion somewhat intact, but the bow and stern are heavily damaged and partially destroyed.
