Product Description
USS Yorktown (CV-10) is one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in April 1943, serving for the rest of the war in the Pacific Theatre in TF 38 and TF 58.1, participating in the Gilbert and Marshall islands invasions, the Marianas and Philippines campaign, among others. She was present to the surrender on 2 September along with TF 38.1.
After the war Intrepid was decommissioned in January 1947, becoming part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet. However, in 1952, the carrier was put back into service and thoroughly modernized following SCB-27A reconstruction to operate jet aircraft, work that was interrupted in 1955 to implement an angled flight deck and other modifications while still  in drydock. The carrier returned to sea in October of that year, until 1957, when reclassified as CVS (anti-submarine warfare carrier), and refitted once more.
From 1964 to 68 Yorktown was engaged in the Vietnam war, relieving her sister Intrepid (CVS-11) as flagship of Carrier Division 16.
After repairs in 1968, the ship was used as the platform to film part of the movie Tora! Tora! Tora!, while in December served as one of the recovery ship for the Apollo 8 mission.

In 1970 Yorktown was deactivated and put in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, being dedicated as a memorial in 1975, being declared a historical landmark in 1986. The ship today is moored as a museum at Patriots Point, South Carolina.
However, in 2015 it was estimated that around $40 million were needed to address maintenance and repairs to the hull of the ship, and later that year tons of old fuel were removed from her bunkers.
