Product Description
USS Essex (CV-9) was the lead ship of the Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in December 1942, serving in the Pacific Theatre in TF 16 and TF 14, being the flagship of the latter. She took part in the Gilbert and Marshall islands invasions, the Marianas and Okinawa campaign, among others. Essex was hit by a special attack aircraft in November 1944, but continued operations after quick repairs. Following the end of the war, she continued to fly defensive CAPs (combat air patrols) until ordered home for deactivation, being decommissioned in January 1947.
However she underwent extensive modernization with a new flight deck and superstructure, emerging in 1951 as flagship of Carrier Division 1 and sent to Korea. She was the first carrier to launch F2H Banshees in combat; however during a landing one such plane crashed on the forward part of the flight deck, and Essex put into Yokosuka harbour for repairs. She made two deployments in Korea, before returning to peacetime activities, and one more extensive reconstruction (SCB-125) in 1955. The carrier returned to sea until 1960, when reclassified as CVS (anti-submarine warfare carrier), and refitted once more.

Essex provided air support to US bombers in the Bay of Pigs, and was part of the blockading force during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
She also was the recovery carrier for the Apollo 7 mission.
After decommissioning in 1969, the ship was put into reserve in Boston Navy Yard, and sold for scrap in 1975.
