Q-12: "Yameco" by ONTOPO
We were asked to create a souvenir to represent Q-12, a group of neighborhoods that flank JFK airport. One neighborhood we chose to put particular focus on is Jamaica. The name of the neighborhood derives
from “Yameco,”a corruption of a word for “beaver” in the Lenape language spoken by the Native Americans who lived in the area at the time of first European contact.
Interestingly though, the etymology of “Jamaica” in reference to Queens differs from that of the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean. The Arawak people of the nation of Jamaica named their land “Xaymaca,” which meant “land of wood and water.” We are interested in the overlap, confusion, and loss of meaning that occurs through colonialism, the erasure and transformation of the collective memory of a community, and the change of land use over time.
