This early class of second class carriages where introduced to service between 1858 and 1886. Beyond this date, second class carriages were typically downgraded to second class and recoded as 'B' class. The subsequent introduction of bogie carriages allowed older fixed-wheel vehicles such as these to be scrapped or converted to works cars.
In the mid- to late-1890s, a number of older stock was marked with a 'H' to indicate that it was "holiday" traffic which was stored for use until busy holiday times of the year. These cars were eventually recoded as 'BH'. In 1910, B and BH class carriages were recoded as Y and YH and renumbered to avoid gaps in numbers caused by conversions and scrapping of vehicles.
This model has been produced to accompany the Rowan steam rail car 2 model available from VR N Scale - See
here. Due to the length of time and scarcity of clear engineering plans, it is unclear whether this model is accurate to the original prototype. It is nevertheless intended to be representative of that passenger carriage which can be seen in the single photograph of the prototype Rowan steam rail car 2.
