Product Description
The P class panzerschiffe (literally armoured ship, viz armoured cruiser) was predicated as part of the Plan Z scenario envisaged by the German Kriegsmarine in the late 1930s. The twelve-ship class was a further development of the D class, which were in turn an improved Deutschland design. The two D class were never completed, the first barely laid down before cancellation and reorder under the temporary name Ersatz Elsass; it would become the battleship Scharnhorst.
The new design for this commerce raiding armoured cruiser had double the design displacement of the Deutschland class, at 23,700 tons, but still carried the same six 28 cm guns in triple turrets, albeit they were the improved model carried on the Scharnhorsts. The secondary battery was cut in half to two centreline 15 cm twin turrets superfiring over the mains, and four twin 10.5 cm mounts and four twin 3.7 cm guns as AA. Despite what is commonly reported, no torpedo tubes were allocated on the original drawings, however the ships had a large hangar for the spotting aircraft (possibly two or more planes).
Main belt was a decent 120 mm of armour, with a 70 mm main deck; however the main reasons for the drastically increased displacement was a top speed of 33 kn, 5 kn faster than Deutschland, and a dramatic increase in range, two critical features in a ship envisaged as a commerce raider.
Of the twelve units planned, not one was laid down, since the design was quickly superseded by the so-called O class battle cruiser, another creation of Plan Z.
