Product Description
At the start of the Second World War in Sept 1939, a number of people in the military around the world thought it would be a repeat of the previous conflict, dominated by artillery, machine guns and static trench warfare. Therefore, the Secretary of the Landship Committee during the Great War, Sir Albert Stern, in company with other engineers involved in tank design during the previous conflict (Tennyson D'Eyncourt, E. Swinton and W. Wilson), was asked by the War Office to design a heavy tank to meet the requirements of trench warfare. Consequently, the 'Special Vehicle Development Committee of the Ministry of Supply', informally known as 'The Old Gang', began working on a series of designs given the short designation of TOG.
The first prototype proved a failure due fried electric drives (first electric and then hydraulic), so work started in earnest on TOG II. It was quite unique in that the V12 diesel engine drove two electric generators powering two electric motors connected to the tracks (a similar arrangement was adopted by Porsche in their development of heavy tank prototypes, most notably the VK 45.01 or Tiger P.).
The final prototype, completed in 1941, weighs around 80 tons, has 3in (75mm) of frontal hull armour and is over 33ft (10mt) long, being designed to cross trenches; it underwent various modifications and changed turrets several times between 1941 and 1944. The prototype survives to this day, displayed at the Tank Museum in Bovington, completed with the last turret mounted on it, with a 17pdr gun.
Even the designation of the tank, with the * (being read as TOG II 'Star') indicates its WW1 heritage: the old Marks I-IX tanks that entered service and underwent modifications were designated with either * (star) or ** (two stars), to differentiate them from the standard version of the tank.
