This is a model of Cheshire Railroad's Number 1,
Rough and Ready. Originally built in 1839 by the Locks and Canals Co. It was rebuilt in 1863, and this model represents the rebuilt version. The locomotive continued in use into the 1870s when it was sold off. Many of these early locomotives spent their twilight years performing switching duties, and this model would be fitting for use as a switching loco for layouts set in the 1850s through 1880s.
The model was scaled from a photograph made of the locomotive in the 1860s. Some details not visible in the photo were taken from a drawing made in the 1870s when it was rebuilt into an 0-4-0. The photos shown here are of the test model, and there are several differences in the currently available model to more accurately represent the prototype, so please check over the 3D render.
- Driving wheels for this model can be had from American Scale Models, listed on their site as "Steam Loco, trailing truck wheels, 54", item number 1037.
- The leading wheels are spoked 36" wheels with flush axle ends available from Precision Scale Models
Important: when this model is printed in a material other than Versatile Plastic, it may be necessary to trim or file the axle openings in order to fit the axles without snapping the plastic. The greater flexibility of Versatile Plastic means a smaller opening is used for better securing the axle in place, however with less flexible options inserting the axles may cause the plastic to break. If the axles will not "snap" in easily, the openings for them will have to be enlarged.
When installing the driving wheels, do not press on the handrailings, this will break them. Press down on the axleboxes.
This model is not meant to motorized, but it can be powered along by the 1838 Locks and Canals tender kit, or by the six wheel tender kit available in my shop.
