Product Description
At the end of World War II, a number of British Railways / Ministry of War 16t coal wagons were exported to France. Quite a few of these were subsequently converted into ballast wagons, with a hopper construction inside, the opening end door welded shut, and 3 doors on each side instead of one. These looked pretty similar to the original side doors BUT they were hinged from the top. Careful inspection of the photograph I have seen shows that the doors on the two outer side panels on each side were very subtly different to the ones on the central panel. Although fairly similar to the side doors on the original slope-sided mineral wagons, the pressing of both varieties of side door on the converted wagons lacks the short vertical detail at the bottom of the 'Y' and I think the original doors were not re-used, or at least not always. The large sprue in this set comprises enough outer and inner panel design doors for 2 converted wagons. The smaller sprue is of six side doors to the original British pattern, hinged at the bottom, and I think these would only be suitable for modification of models of other UK 16t mineral wagons, not the SNCF ballast wagon conversions - unless you have evidence to the contrary, that is. If you do, please tell me about it! The 2mm Scale Association sells a plastic kit of the slope-sided mineral wagon, including an etched chassis. It does require short axles as the chassis is narrower than many similar mineral wagons, and it is not easy to source suitably short axled N-gauge wheelsets.
Graham Farish sell an N-gauge model of the 16t slope sided mineral wagon, which should also be suitable for conversion. I have uploaded a print design for the 6-compartment hoppering insert, if you wish to model the wagon without a full load.
The second and fifth door along each side of the larger print is a middle panel door, and the others are outer panel doors. Look closely at toz's photo or enlarge the render, and you may be able to see that the little triangle has softer corners on the outer doors. This matches the photographs I have seen of these wagons when new, so far. I expect they were interchangeable when repairs were made though, so other arrangements may have been seen. The hinged edge of the doors is along the inside of the print, and is the top edge when fitted to the wagon. So the doors below the wagon in the photo are the right way up for fitting to the wagon.
