Asterionella Diatom Earrings - Science Jewelry

These stellar earrings are based on the colony structure of the freshwater diatom Asterionella. Single Asterionella cells are surrounded by tubular-shaped silicon shells. The individual cells, however, form a star-like colony formation with 8 to 20 other cells. The cells are anchored in the center by extracelluar matter. Asterionella is one of the most abundant types of algae in freshwater environments.
