 This is a Gyroid minimal surface.  It was created using open source software.  K3Dsurf to generate the surfaces, Blender to give it thickness, and Meshlab and Freecad to treat the mesh.  The size is about 5cm across.  A color version of this model with thicker walls so it can be printed in full color sandstone can be found here: 3D color gyroid minimal surface.

This model was created with open source software. K3Dsurf, Blender, Meshlab, and FreeCAD. Color was added according to curvature.  The size of this model is about 5 cm across.  A thinner version without color can be found here: 3D Gyroid No color thin walls.

This portafilter holder for the Bodum coffee grinder was created out of necessity.  I needed a way to grind my beans and not spend $300 for a costly grinder.  Total cost of this solution is around $120.  

Bodum Bistro Burr Coffee Grinder  = $90
Rapid Prototype Portafilter Holder = $30
Total cost = US $120

The portafilter holder was created using one of my favorite open source projects: FreeCad.  If you order this accessory for the grinder, remember that it will 3D printed for you and that it might take more than a couple of weeks to be printed.  Shapeways is good at printing quickly, but this will take a bit longer than a mass produced product.

This apple was created following mathematical recipe found in 3d-meier.de (look under tutorials). Some of the parameters were exagerated to allow holes in the object so that only the 3D shell is printed instead of a filled object.  For reference, the height of the object is about 6cm.  Basic equation that you can use to generate this shape is of the family of a "Dullo":
 (x2+y2+z2)2-(x2+y2) = 0

What you need:
1. Equations (find at 3d-menier.de)
2. K3Dsurf (open source software, realize mathematical equations into shapes!)
2. Blender (open source awesome software for 3D mesh creation)
3. MeshLab (very easy to use mesh quatlity fixing software)
4. Patience and a bit of figuring out the software

Steps to making this Nifty 3D Apple:
1. Find the precise equation in 3d-menier.de
2. Download and install K3Dsurf
3. Use the equation provided by 3d-menier.de and copy it into the pa
3. Save the mesh using K3Dsurf
4. Import into Blender
5. Use Blender to give it thickness (because the equation is that of a thin shell), I gave it 1mm
4. Import the mesh into MeshLab
5. Use the Smoothing algorithms (I used Gaussian)
6. Upload into Shapeways and be ready to print

 This 3D shape was created using mathematical equations.  The equations are put into an Open Source software called k3Dsurf.org (one of the Demos in the software).  Then the mesh was improved using FreeCAD .  Lastly, this shape was uploaded into Shapeways to be printed.  You could make it yourself, upload it, and then
