This is a three-dimensional Union Jack.

After some light sanding the parts will fit together very snugly, without any need for glue.

I've colored this one with Sharpie brand permanent marker, which appears to work well and not transfer to the white parts of the model too much.

Update! The Kickstarter project to have a run of Mathematician's Dice manufactured has been a great success! Buy the Mathematician's Dice here!

A die designed for mathematicians! Rather than the relatively boring numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, this die is jam-packed with the six most important numbers in mathematics! It has: the imaginary number i; the additive identity 0, the multiplicative identity 1, the golden ratio φ (1.618...); Euler's number e (2.718...); and the circular constant π (3.141...).

Any mathematician (and many scientists too) will recognize not just the symbols but the typeface: they were rendered using Donald Knuth's Computer Modern typeface, part of the TeX/LaTeX system, the gold-standard for mathematical and scientific publications.

This die is the perfect gift for the mathematician or scientist (or gamer) in your life!

The symbols were rendered in LaTeX, converted to SVG with pstoedit & Insksape, turned into a TrueTupe font with FontForge, and then added to the existing die shape using Google Sketchup.

Please rate this model if you like it! C'mon, you know you want to give it five stars! :)

This is a model of Boy's Surface, a one-sided surface with no edges and no pinch points.

In the cutaway images you can see a small ball. It can roll in three directions but is trapped in the space cut out by the single-sided surface.

The ball is visible through a single cut that winds around the surface.

Note: The ball is red for clarity in the screenshots only. The entire model will be the same color when printed.

Other versions:

The green knot revolves twice, making three full rotations along the way. It forms a rectangular cross section and a triangular hole.

The blue knot revolves three times, making two full rotations along the way. It forms a triangular cross section and a rectangular hole.

The two knots fit perfectly together, and only orbit each other by moving together.

Inspired by Oskar van Deventer's original Knotted Gear: http://www.shapeways.com/model/11915/knotted_gear.html

The first few rotations of the knots will feel a bit rough, but once you gently rotate them ten to twenty times, they smooth out. Also, the knots rotate much easier in one direction than in the other.

Seven, eight, and nine pips easily fit on a standard die, so why not have one with that many? The remaining three faces have the standard dot patterns for four, five, and six.

You'll have to paint in the pips yourself.

To make the die cheaper, there's a pocket in the center that's filled with the support material.

A Lego-compatible, three legged, two headed mini-figure. Legs are fully moveable. Only the torso and the hips/legs are included, you must provide your own heads and arms.

The torso was printed slightly warped, and it cracked when I put the arms in. If your print is warped or distorted, ask Shapeways for a reprint. All the edges should be straight and the flat surfaces should be completely flat.

This is a puzzle proof of the Pythagorean theorem starting from triangles instead of squares. The puzzle is actually quite difficult.

This is a fourteen-sided die with cuboctohedral symmetry. The hexagonal and square faces are exactly the same area, so they are equally likely landing positions. I've verified that it's fair to within 0.5% with 600 rolls of this die.

I'm making it available as a co-creator template so that others can use it as a base for their fourteen-sided die ideas.

There's a 0.1mm hole in one of the square faces to ensure that Shapeways' software sees it as hollow, as described here: http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/515-Website-Update-New-Volume-Calculation.html . The hole is too small to be visible in the printed version.

This is a model of Boy's Surface, a one-sided surface with no edges and no pinch points.

This is a modified version of Trapped Outside, without the cut-away track or internal ball. This version has a tiny hole at the three-way intersection point so that Shapeways recognizes the internal space as empty and doesn't charge for it. The hole is so small it will not be printed, and the interior will be filled with support material.

This is a modified version of Trapped Outside, without the cut-away track or internal ball. Shapeways treats the entire inside of this model as solid, hence the higher price.
