Product Description
This is a Sims-class funnel intended to help convert the Dragon Benson-class destroyer into a Sims-class destroyer. To complete the conversion, you will need to fill in the various deck depressions on the Benson main deck and then install the funnel. I would recommend using a set of plans and/or photos to ensure proper placement. Be aware that while the rendered image shows a very small set of whistles atop the piping running up the forward end of the funnel and indeed those whistles are on the CAD model, they are unprintable at the present time (odd that Shapeways accepted the file but can’t print the whistles. Hopefully, the technology will evolve in the near future to allow for them to be printable). I would recommend sourcing whistles from very small scale model railroad stocks, for example. Also, be aware that there are two parts to this model, the funnel and the mushroom vent sticking up in between the forward legs. Shapeways may bags this separately from the funnel (or not), so when your order arrives be alert to this and don’t lose this little vent. It installs on the ship’s centerline in between the forward legs just in front of the where the piping meets the main deck. Note on accuracy... I did the best I could using official US Navy plans and photos. However, many of the smaller details had to be interpreted from these photos as they weren’t in the plans. For example, the piping is accurate, or as accurate as I could get it, for Hughes and Russell circa 1941-43, but these ships changed all of the time. Check your references for small details to be sure that this funnel is right for you, and for the specific ship that you’re modeling. I recommend ordering this in Frosted Extreme Detail due to the little details connected with the piping and whistle platform.
