This Kawung Batik Pendant is based upon a batik design.
Kawung is one of the oldest batik designs, and was a forbidden design of the Java royal courts. The kawung design is characterized by four ovals that are placed at 90 degree angles. These ovals also create circular units, which are repeated as a pattern.
Batik is a wax resist technique used in dyeing fabric. This technique is thought to have originated in Java, Indonesia. In Indonesia patterns had many meanings, and batik fabric was not just clothing but also showed social status, and certain patterns were only for ceremonies and higher classes.
