This is a model of one of Burlington Northern's Woodchip Gondola classes built by FMC in 1971, A common sight on Western rails, many have been sold onto GBRX and MRL
Built in 1971 to FMC lot 17308, consisted of 150 cars, BN 585200-585349 and almost identical to three other lots bought by BN in the early 1970s. The four lots of cars are subtly different and I offer models of each.
This model is designed to use the following detail parts: Athearn ASF 100ton Trucks or Accurail Barber B-2 Roller Bearing Trucks, Tichy ladder rungs (3062) Tichy 18" Drop Grab Irons (3015), Tichy 18" Grab Irons (3021), , Moloco Freight Car Appliance Kit - Equipo 4000 (CA0303) (needs a lever rather than a wheel), Yarmouth Models Proto2000 tankcar stirrups (203)
The car will accept either Kadee or Sergent couplers
To reduce distortion during shipping of the sides and cross braces, I added three triangular cross braces that need to be removed to complete the model. The 6 round cross braces are part of the car and should be left, although they did get bent and lost in service. Use wire cutters to cut the 3 temporary braces near to the top cord then sand flat.
The following hardware is also needed: Everbilt 8in Mending Plate SKU 242993 (available from Home depot). 2-56 Hex Jam Nut and screws (length TBD) to mount trucks. M2 Countersink screws or equivalent for coupler pockets.
