Product Description
In Chinese philosophy, the concept of Yin-Yang -- literally meaning "shadow and light" -- is used to describe how seemingly opposite forces are interconnected in the natural world. Many natural dualities (dark & light, female & male, water & fire, etc.) are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin-yang concept.
In this lamp, yin and yang are complementary forces, interacting to form a whole greater than either separate part.
This softly wrapped surface makes an amazing lamp, bright on the left side and darker on the right. This lamp could simply not exist without 3D-printing. The surface is entirely defined by a mathematical function, transformed into a polygonal mesh using the open source software "functy". This polygonal mesh has then been processed by a home-made Python script that created more than 25,000 holes in its surface. These holes serve two purposes: they yield amazing "moiré" effects and also help lowering the printing cost. The perforated surface has then been finalized using the open source software blender (addition of a thicker border, feets, internal cavity for the LED lamp).
The lamp is provided as is, with no lighting or electrical equipment. The cavity in the middle of the lamp can host a GU-10 based LED lamp (the hole has a 52mm diameter, the GU-10 LED lamps are 50mm large). With few watts, these LEDs can provide a powerful light, equivalent to a 30 to 70 W traditional lamp. They can be directly connected to the grid (do not require a dedicated transformer).
